Mirror Glass, Packaging & Price: What to Check Before You Buy a Decorative Mirror in India

Updated 23 October 2026 · By the artisanfirst | DREAMYWALLS design studio, Noida

Before you buy a decorative mirror in India, check four things: the glass (copper-free, 5 mm for larger mirrors, from a known maker), how clear the reflection is, how it will be packed, and what happens if it arrives broken. Handmade carved wooden mirrors cost more, roughly ₹2,890 to ₹22,500 in our range, because each frame takes 15 to 50 days of hand work. This guide explains each check in plain language, using how we make and ship mirrors at artisanfirst | DREAMYWALLS.

Quick answers

  • What is copper-free mirror glass? Mirror glass made without a copper layer behind the silver, so it resists the corrosion that causes black edges.
  • Is 4 mm or 5 mm mirror glass better? 4 mm suits mirrors up to about 1 m²; 5 mm is better for larger mirrors. Ours are all 5 mm HD.
  • Which glass brands do you use? Saint-Gobain or Modiguard, 5 mm HD copper-free.
  • Why do mirrors get black edges? Moisture reaches the silver backing and corrodes it, often from cleaner sprayed on the glass running into the edges.
  • How are your mirrors packed? In mycelium packaging grown from agricultural waste. It's compostable, and our packing is drop-tested.
  • What if my mirror arrives broken? We replace it free. An unboxing video makes the claim quick.
  • How much does a decorative wall mirror cost in India? Our handmade mirrors range from ₹2,890 (set of 2) to ₹22,500.
  • Do you offer cash on delivery? Yes. Delivery is free across India and usually takes 3–5 days.

What is copper-free mirror glass, and why does it last longer?

Copper-free mirror glass has a silver coating protected by special paints instead of a copper layer. Older mirrors used copper behind the silver, and copper corrodes in humid air, which shows up as black edges and spots. VSOM Glass's explainer on copper-free mirrors covers how removing copper improves resistance to corrosion. For Indian homes, with monsoon humidity and coastal air, this matters more than in dry climates.

Modiguard's copper-free range, for example, is tested for humidity and salt spray, as described on Gujarat Guardian's Modiguard UltraMirror page. Our mirrors use 5 mm HD copper-free glass.

Silver or aluminium mirror: which is better?

Silver mirrors give a brighter, truer reflection and are the standard for decorative and bathroom use. Aluminium mirrors are cheaper and reflect a little less light. If a seller doesn't say which coating they use, ask.

Is 4 mm or 5 mm mirror glass better?

4 mm glass is fine for mirrors up to about 1 square metre, and 5 mm is better for mirrors between 1 and 1.5 square metres, according to Bathroom Mountain's mirror thickness guide. Thicker glass is stiffer, so it bends less and gives a flatter, steadier reflection on tall mirrors. It also feels more solid when handled.

To work out area, multiply height by width in metres. A 152 x 64 cm mirror is 1.52 x 0.64 = about 0.97 m². A 188 x 86 cm mirror is about 1.62 m². We use 5 mm HD glass on every mirror, small or large, so you don't have to do this maths with us.

Saint-Gobain or Modiguard: does the brand matter?

Yes, buying from a known glass maker matters more than which of the two you choose. Both are established makers of float glass (glass poured flat over molten tin, which gives an even surface) with consistent thickness. Our mirrors use one of these two, in 5 mm HD copper-free glass. Our Triple Oval mirror uses Saint-Gobain glass with a nano shatter coating.

Unbranded glass can be thinner than stated, or uneven, which shows up as wavy reflections.

How do you check a mirror for distortion?

Stand about 1–2 metres away and look at a straight line in the reflection, such as a door frame or tile line, while you move side to side. If the line bends, ripples or stretches, the glass is uneven. Check the corners as well as the centre. On a framed mirror, also check that the frame isn't twisted. A frame that pulls on the glass can bend the reflection slightly.

When your mirror arrives, check this in the first few days. If something looks wrong, WhatsApp us within the 7-day return window.

Why do mirrors get black edges or black spots?

Black edges come from moisture reaching the silver backing and corroding it. The most common cause at home is glass cleaner sprayed straight onto the mirror. The liquid runs down and soaks into the edges, where the protective backing is thinnest. Steam in a closed bathroom and damp walls do the same over time.

How can you prevent black edges?

  • Choose copper-free glass (ours is).
  • Spray cleaner onto a cloth, never onto the mirror.
  • Avoid ammonia-based or harsh cleaners near the edges.
  • Keep bathroom mirrors in a ventilated room, and run an exhaust fan after showers.
  • Don't hang mirrors on a wall that shows damp patches.

How do you clean a mirror with a wooden frame?

Clean the glass with a microfibre cloth lightly dampened with water or glass cleaner, sprayed onto the cloth, not the mirror. MirrorMate's frame care guide gives the same advice, because liquid on the glass runs into both the frame and the mirror edges.

For the wooden frame, dust it with a dry soft cloth or a soft brush for carved areas. Wipe spills straight away with a barely damp cloth, then dry it. Don't use water-heavy cleaners, polish sprays or bleach on the wood. Most of our frames are solid mango wood with a walnut finish. Our mango wood and marble care guide covers wood care in more detail.

How are decorative mirrors packed for delivery?

We pack our mirrors in mycelium packaging. Mycelium is the root network of mushrooms, grown on agricultural waste into a firm, foam-like shape that holds the mirror in place. It's compostable, so there's no plastic foam or thermocol to throw away. We drop-test our packing to check it protects the glass in transit.

Finishing a mirror in our workshop, then drop-testing it in its mycelium packaging.

What should you check on any mirror's packing?

Ask the seller three things: is the glass held so it can't move inside the box, are the corners protected, and has the packing been tested? Corners take most of the knocks in transit. A mirror that can slide even a centimetre inside its box can crack.

What happens if a mirror arrives broken?

If your mirror arrives damaged, we replace it free. Mirrors are fragile, and even good packing can't stop every courier accident, so we'd rather fix it fast than argue about it.

How do you make a damage claim quick?

  1. Record a short unboxing video from the moment you start opening the box. It isn't required, but it makes the claim much quicker.
  2. Take photos of the outer box and the damage.
  3. Send them on WhatsApp with your order number.

Apart from damage, every order has 7-day returns with free pickup. Full details are in our refund policy.

How much does a decorative wall mirror cost in India?

Our handmade wooden mirrors cost from ₹2,890 for a set of two small mirrors to ₹22,500 for our largest carved pieces. Factory-made mirrors with moulded frames cost much less. What you pay for in a handmade mirror is the frame: solid wood, hand carving, and the time it takes.

Why do handmade carved mirrors cost more?

Handmade carved mirrors cost more because of time and material. Each of our frames takes 15 to 50 days to make, depending on the design. Our Asymmetric S-Shaped mirror takes about 40–45 days, and the Heritage Carved about 45–50 days.

What goes into the frame?

  • Solid mango wood, stabilised. Most of our frames are solid mango wood, dried to 10–12% moisture. Moisture-stabilised means the wood has been dried to a steady level, so it's less likely to crack or warp as seasons change.
  • Saharanpur woodwork. The frames are shaped, carved and finished by woodworkers in Saharanpur, a town known for wood carving.
  • Hand finishing. Each frame is finished by hand, so no two look exactly alike.
  • Better glass and packing. 5 mm HD copper-free glass and drop-tested compostable packaging both cost more than the basic options.

Are all your frames solid wood?

No, and we want to be clear about it. Most of our frames are solid mango wood. Our two inlay mirrors, Mother-of-Pearl Inlay and Monochrome Inlay, have MDF frames (MDF is engineered board made from wood fibres pressed together). MDF gives the flat, stable surface that inlay work needs. You can see how our pieces are made on The Making.

Is a mirror a good gift?

Yes, a mirror is a good gift for a housewarming, a wedding or a new office, as long as you get the size and style right. It's useful every day, it lasts for years, and it suits most rooms.

How do you choose a mirror as a gift?

  • Go smaller if you don't know their walls. A pair like our Moroccan Scallop set of 2 (₹2,890) or the Ribbed Wood mirror (₹4,990, 60.9 cm) fits almost anywhere.
  • Pick a calm frame. A plain or softly carved wooden frame suits more homes than a very ornate one.
  • Check the delivery address. Heavy mirrors are easier to send straight to the recipient than to carry.
  • Tell them about returns. Our 7-day return with free pickup covers gifts too.

How long does delivery take, and is cash on delivery available?

Delivery is free across India and usually takes 3–5 days. Cash on delivery is available. If you need a mirror by a specific date, WhatsApp us to check before you order.

Once your order ships, you can follow it on our order tracking page. Every mirror arrives with wall hooks, and most have D-rings already fixed on the back, ready to hang.

What should you check before you buy any decorative mirror?

Use this checklist with any seller:

  1. Is the glass copper-free, and how thick is it?
  2. Which glass maker is it from?
  3. Is the frame solid wood, MDF or something else?
  4. What is the weight, and what hanging hardware comes with it?
  5. How is it packed, and is the packing tested?
  6. What happens if it arrives broken, and how long is the return window?

Our answers: 5 mm HD copper-free glass from Saint-Gobain or Modiguard; mostly solid mango wood (MDF on the two inlay designs); wall hooks included (D-rings fixed on most designs); drop-tested mycelium packaging; free replacement for damage and 7-day returns with free pickup.
