A wall mirror should be about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it, and its centre should sit about 145–152 cm (57–60 in) from the floor. Over a sofa, console or bed, leave a gap of roughly 15–30 cm (6–12 in) above the furniture. This guide works through real examples using the mirrors we make at artisanfirst | DREAMYWALLS, and shows how to hang a heavy mirror safely on Indian brick or concrete walls.
Quick answers
- What size mirror over a sofa? About half to three-quarters of the sofa's width, or a pair of mirrors that together fill that space.
- What size mirror over a console or bed? About two-thirds to three-quarters of the console or bed width.
- What size mirror over a washbasin? No wider than the basin counter, ideally 5–10 cm (2–4 in) narrower on each side.
- How high should a mirror hang? Centre at 145–152 cm (57–60 in) from the floor on an empty wall.
- How big a gap above furniture? About 10–20 cm over a console and 20–30 cm over a sofa.
- What size is a full-length mirror? At least half the height of the tallest person using it.
- Can I hang a heavy mirror on a brick or concrete wall? Yes, with a masonry drill, wall plugs rated for the weight, two fixing points and the D-rings on the back. Never adhesive hooks.
- Do your mirrors come with hooks? Yes. Every mirror ships with wall hooks, and most have D-rings already fixed on the back.
What size mirror should go over a sofa?
A mirror over a sofa should be about 50–75% of the sofa's width. Design guides from Wayfair's wall mirror size guide and Ideal Home's living room mirror rule both use the two-thirds idea, with sofas allowed to go a little narrower. Too small and the mirror looks lost. Too wide and it looks like it is sliding off the sofa.
Worked example: a 3-seater sofa
A typical Indian 3-seater is about 200 cm (79 in) wide. Half to three-quarters of that is 100–150 cm (39–59 in). One way to fill it is the Asymmetric Studio mirror or Oval Asymmetric mirror placed off-centre with a lamp or plant beside it. Another is a pair: two Capsule mirrors (56 cm on the narrow side) with a 15 cm gap between them spans about 127 cm, close to two-thirds of the sofa.
Worked example: a 2-seater sofa
A 2-seater around 150 cm (59 in) wide suits a mirror 75–110 cm (30–43 in) wide. Our Classic Round mirror at Ø78.7 cm (31 in) sits at the lower end of that range, which works well on a busy wall.
What size mirror should go over a console table?
Go for two-thirds to three-quarters of the console's width. For a 120 cm (47 in) console, that is 80–90 cm (31–35 in). Several of our mirrors fall right in that band: the Classic Round (Ø78.7 cm), the 3-Layer (81.2 cm square), the Asymmetric Studio (81.2 x 64 cm) and the Oval Asymmetric (91.4 x 81.2 cm). A console in an entrance is also where a tall arched mirror can lean or hang above, if the ceiling allows.
What size mirror should go over a bed?
A mirror over a bed should be about two-thirds to three-quarters of the bed's width. For a 152 cm (60 in) queen bed, that is about 100–115 cm (39–45 in). Our Triple Oval mirror at 96.5 x 101.6 cm is close to that. For a 183 cm (72 in) king bed you would want 120–137 cm, which is wider than most single decorative mirrors, so a pair (one over each bedside table) often looks better than one piece over the headboard.
Hang it high enough that you won't hit it when sitting up, and fix it with two screws into the wall. A mirror over a bed must never rely on a single nail.
What size mirror should go over a washbasin?
A basin mirror should be no wider than the vanity or counter, ideally 5–10 cm (2–4 in) narrower on each side, as Wayfair's guide suggests. For a 60 cm (24 in) basin, look at a mirror about 40–55 cm (16–22 in) wide. Our Striped Curve mirror (81.3 x 54.6 cm) and Capsule mirror (86.4 x 55.9 cm) are close to that width.
One honest note: most of our frames are solid mango wood. Wood is happiest in a powder room or a well-ventilated bathroom, away from direct shower splash. If your bathroom stays steamy, WhatsApp us and we'll tell you which piece suits it best.

How high should you hang a wall mirror?
On an empty wall, hang the mirror so its centre is 145–152 cm (57–60 in) from the floor. That is roughly eye level for most adults, and it's the same height galleries use for art, as Worthing Court's guide to hanging art and mirrors explains. If your family is shorter or taller than average, shift it a few centimetres to suit the person who uses it most.
How much gap should you leave above furniture?
Leave about 15–20 cm (6–8 in) between the furniture and the bottom of the mirror. Kylie M Interiors' mirror placement tips go a little further by spot: about 10–20 cm over a console, 20–30 cm over a sofa, and 13–38 cm over a basin, depending on the tap height.
Which rule wins: the centre height or the gap?
Over furniture, the gap wins. Say your sofa back is 85 cm high and you leave a 20 cm gap. The mirror's bottom edge sits at 105 cm. A 127 cm tall mirror then has its centre at about 168 cm, above the 145–152 cm guide, and that's fine. The mirror should look connected to the sofa, not floating far above it.
What size should a full-length mirror be?
A full-length mirror should be at least half the height of the tallest person using it, according to Wayfair. For someone 170 cm (5 ft 7 in) tall, that means at least 85 cm of glass, hung so the top sits just above head height. Taller is easier: our Heritage Carved (189.2 cm), Arched Stripe (187.9 cm) and Monumental Sculpt (152.4 cm) all show you head to toe and can hang on the wall or lean on the floor.

One big mirror or a pair?
One big mirror gives calm and makes a room feel larger. A pair or group gives rhythm and suits wide walls where one piece would be too narrow. If you go with a group, treat the whole group as one shape and apply the two-thirds rule to its total width, gaps included.
Small mirrors work well in pairs. Our Moroccan Scallop set of 2 (38 x 38 cm each) suits a narrow wall beside a door, a reading corner, or the space above twin bedside tables. Keep 8–15 cm between pieces so they read as a set.

Which mirror shape suits which spot?
Round mirrors soften rooms full of straight lines. Rectangular mirrors fit structured spaces and wide furniture. William Wood's guide to round versus rectangular mirrors makes the same point: pick the shape that balances the furniture, not one that copies it.
- Round: over a rectangular console, in an entrance, or a bathroom with square tiles.
- Rectangle or capsule: over a basin, or a pair over a long sofa.
- Arch: entrances, dressing corners and living rooms with high ceilings. It reads like a window.
- Asymmetric: anywhere you want the mirror to feel like art. More on this below.

Where do asymmetric mirrors work best?
Asymmetric mirrors work best where they can be seen as a single object: an entrance wall, a console, a stair landing, or off-centre over a sofa with a lamp beside it. Because the shape is uneven, it doesn't need to line up with the furniture. You can shift it to one side and let a plant or lamp balance the other.
They are harder in a tight group of frames, where the shape gets lost. They also need a little space around them. Give an asymmetric piece at least 20–30 cm of clear wall on each side.

How do you make a small room look bigger with a mirror?
Hang the mirror opposite a window to bounce the most daylight into the room. Real Homes' advice on mirrors in small bedrooms recommends exactly this. The mirror shows the view and doubles the light.
Opposite or next to the window?
Opposite gives the most light. Next to the window (on the side wall) spreads light along the room and avoids glare in your eyes. In a narrow flat, a tall mirror on the long wall makes the room feel wider, and a mirror at the end of a corridor makes it feel shorter.
Before you fix it, stand where you'll sit most often and check what the mirror reflects. A view of trees or a lamp is pleasant. A view of a cluttered shelf or the bathroom door is not.
Is it safe to lean a tall mirror on the floor?
Yes, if you do three things. Lean it at a gentle angle, with the base about 10–15 cm (4–6 in) out from the wall. Put anti-slip pads under the bottom edge, especially on marble or vitrified tile floors, which are slippery. And tie the top to the wall with a small anti-tip strap or a hook, so it can't slide sideways or fall forward if someone bumps it.
Only lean mirrors that are made for it. Ours that can lean are the Heritage Carved, Arched Stripe and Monumental Sculpt. Keep leaning mirrors out of walkways and away from doors that swing open.

How do you hang a heavy mirror on an Indian brick or concrete wall?
Drill two holes with a masonry drill bit, push in wall plugs rated for more than the mirror's weight, drive in screws, and hang the mirror by both D-rings. Most Indian homes have brick walls or RCC walls (reinforced cement concrete, the hard concrete used for columns and beams). Both hold a heavy mirror well when fixed this way. Home Depot's guide to hanging a heavy mirror and Housing.com's heavy mirror tips cover the same basic method.
Step by step
- Check the weight. Our mirrors weigh about 5 kg to 22 kg (see the table above). Pick fixings rated for more than that.
- Check for wires and pipes. Don't drill directly above or below switches, sockets or taps. Wires and pipes often run straight up or down from them. A cheap wire detector helps.
- Mark two points. Measure the distance between the two D-rings on the back of the mirror. Mark that distance on the wall and check it's level with a spirit level.
- Drill with a masonry bit. Use a hammer drill on brick or RCC. Match the bit size to the wall plug.
- Fit the wall plugs. Tap in the plastic wall plugs (often called rawl plugs) so they sit flush with the wall. Check the load rating on the pack.
- Drive in the screws. Leave the heads sticking out just enough to hold the D-rings.
- Hang with two people. Hook both D-rings over the screws, then check the level again.
What comes in the box?
Every artisanfirst | DREAMYWALLS mirror ships with wall hooks and nails, and most come with D-rings (metal rings) already fixed to the back of the frame; the Triple Oval has a hanger built into its backing. If your wall or setup needs a different hook type, message us before ordering and ask. We'll check what we can send.
Can I use adhesive hooks or a single nail?
No. Adhesive strips and stick-on hooks are not meant for mirrors of this weight. Indian walls also often have putty or distemper that can peel away under load. A single nail lets the mirror tilt and puts all the weight on one point. Use two screws in wall plugs every time.
Can someone install it for me?
Yes. Installation is simple, and you can book a fitter yourself through Urban Company. We'll guide you or your fitter on WhatsApp or a phone call, including where the D-rings sit and what spacing to mark. In-person help from our team is available only in Delhi NCR.
Are wall mirrors safe with small children?
Yes, when they're fixed securely. Hang mirrors with two screws into wall plugs, never on one nail, and check the fixing every few months. In a child's room or play area, keep mirrors above reach, and avoid leaning tall mirrors where children run or climb. If you love a leaning mirror, strap the top to the wall.
Our Triple Oval mirror uses Saint-Gobain glass with a nano shatter coating. For any piece, WhatsApp us about the safest spot for it in your home.

How do you choose the right mirror in five minutes?
Measure the furniture width, multiply by two-thirds, and pick a mirror close to that number. Then check the wall height from the furniture to the ceiling, so the mirror fits with a 15–30 cm gap below. Finally, check the weight against your wall and fixings.
Most of our mirror frames are made by hand in Saharanpur from solid mango wood. The two inlay designs (Mother-of-Pearl and Monochrome) have MDF frames. You can see how they're made on The Making, and browse the full range in our mirror collection. For care of wooden frames, see our mango wood and marble care guide.
All orders come with free delivery across India (usually 3–5 days), cash on delivery, and 7-day returns with free pickup. Anything that arrives damaged is replaced free. See our refund policy.
